About the Book

The hosting of the Working Class Summit at the end of July 2018 brought together anti-neoliberal social movements and trade unions for the first time in over 20 years. The significance of this event still lies in the future, but it already provides a platform for engagement between these two important components of the forces struggling against the effects of neoliberalism and austerity politics on the working class. At the Summit important debates were opened up on socialist-orientated working class forces to participation in elections, in particular to the coming elections in 2019.

This volume of perspectives and documents bring together articles that focus on the attitudes of left movements to bourgeois institutions and in particular to participation in parliamentary elections. The documents and articles were written in the mid-to-late 2000s, and debated social movements approach to the 2004 and 2009 elections, as well as debating the attitude of socialists to bourgeois institutions in general.
